Exactly one year ago, at the BOOT Show 2025 in Düsseldorf, Germany, the UWACAM team introduced something new to the world of underwater imaging: a mobile app built from the ground up to help divers capture better underwater footage with dramatically less effort.
What began as an ambitious idea—simplifying underwater photography and videography while giving divers powerful, professional-grade tools—has now evolved into a thriving, continuously innovated platform used by hundreds of divers around the world.
As we celebrate UWACAM's first birthday, we're taking a moment to reflect on how far the app has come, the milestones we've reached along the way, and the passionate global community that has grown around it. And, of course, we're thrilled to share the news that many of you have been waiting for: UWACAM is now officially available on Android.
This year's BOOT Show in Düsseldorf marks not just a celebration, but a major next step on our journey.
When we launched UWACAM in January 2025, our vision was clear: enhance the underwater photography experience by empowering divers of any skill level with intuitive, fast, and intelligently optimized camera controls tailored specifically for underwater conditions.
In a nutshell, this became our mantra and our claim: capture ocean beauty. effortlessly.
The positive reception from the diving community energized us immediately, and it quickly became clear that UWACAM could grow into far more than a convenient camera app.
Over the past twelve months, our development roadmap has been driven by two things: user feedback and our commitment to elevating the standards of underwater imaging.
Since launch, UWACAM has undergone continuous refinement. We've spent countless hours studying how divers use the app—whether in calm tropical waters, murky lakes, or complex cave systems. Every update has been shaped by real-world insights, focusing on what matters most once the diver enters the water: speed, clarity, reliability, and effortless access to the right tools at the right moment.
From optimizing button layout for gloved use, to improving in-app exposure control, to enhancing stability across a wide range of smartphone devices, the app has grown month after month into a robust platform that supports divers in increasingly dynamic environments.
But beyond these foundational improvements, two major feature releases defined UWACAM's first year.
Perhaps the most significant milestone to date has been the launch of UWACAM 2.0—an upgrade that pushed the app from "useful tool" to "powerful underwater imaging system."
Anyone who has ever used a standard smartphone camera underwater knows the struggle: colors wash out, reds vanish, and natural tones are quickly lost as depth increases. Traditional filters help, but they can be cumbersome and limiting.
UWACOLOR Processing takes a different approach. It applies adaptive color-restoration algorithms tailored specifically for underwater conditions. Instead of relying on generic color correction, UWACOLOR reconstructs tones based on the physics of light absorption underwater, both for photos and video - in the case of video adapting the process every second. Reds and oranges reappear naturally, blues are balanced intelligently, and the overall image regains the richness and vibrancy that divers see with their own eyes.
For many users, UWACOLOR became a game-changer—especially for those who don't want to spend hours in post-production just to make a dive photo look right but might prefer to share beautiful footage the moment they surface.
The second major innovation in the 2.0 release was the introduction of AI Fish Identification, a feature that blends machine learning with marine biology insight.
With a single tap, divers can analyze their images and receive insightful information about the species captured in their shot. Whether it's a common reef inhabitant or a more elusive species, the AI provides a starting point for divers who want to learn more about the marine life they encounter. It's a feature that resonates deeply with underwater photographers, macro enthusiasts, instructors, and marine biology hobbyists alike.
These improvements marked a clear step forward in our mission: not just helping divers take better photos, but enabling them to deepen their connection to the underwater world.
UWACAM wouldn't be where it is today without the extraordinary community that has grown around it. What started with a handful of curious early adopters at last year's BOOT Show has expanded into a family of users well into the four digit range worldwide—and that number continues to grow steadily, with dozens of new divers joining every week.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been seeing the diversity of divers using UWACAM. We've heard from:
Across skill levels, the feedback has been consistent: UWACAM makes underwater imaging easier, faster, and more enjoyable—without sacrificing quality.
From the very beginning, one of the most common questions we received was: "When will an Android version be available?"
Today, we're excited to say: it's here.
At this year's BOOT Show in Düsseldorf—exactly one year after the original launch—we officially unveiled the long-awaited Android version of UWACAM. This marks a major milestone not only for our team, but for the entire underwater imaging community.
Android users can now enjoy the same streamlined interface, UWACOLOR Processing, AI Fish Identification, and fast-access underwater controls that iOS users have been relying on for a year. Most importantly, divers using Divevolk housings on Android now have full access to UWACAM's capabilities. Whether a diver uses iOS or Android no longer matters—UWACAM is now fully inclusive and ready for everyone.
In many ways, releasing the Android version feels like the perfect birthday present for the UWACAM community—an expansion of the family, and a commitment to ensuring no diver is left out.
"Seeing what you create with UWACAM—reefscapes rich with color, playful turtles, shy macro creatures, moody wreck explorations—reminds us why we do this. We are profoundly grateful for the trust you've placed in us and for the energy you bring to this journey."
As we reflect on UWACAM's first year, one thing stands out above all else: we would not be here without our users. Your enthusiasm, your feedback, your suggestions, and—most importantly—your incredible underwater images have shaped UWACAM into what it is today.
Every photo and video you share, every message you send, and every story you tell inspires us to keep building, keep fine-tuning, and keep pushing the boundaries of what underwater imaging can be on a smartphone.
And we're just getting started.
Here's to an amazing first year.
Here's to a growing community.
Here's to sharper colors, smarter tools, and even more breathtaking images.
And here's to everything we'll build together in year two.
Thank you to every diver who has been part of the adventure so far.
